Beware of fake QR codes

Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns people of fake QR codes. Scammers are using fake QR codes to collect personal information. This is known as QR phishing.


Common ways scammers QR phish

Use time constraint messages or fear tactics to lead people to scan the QR code.

Pretend to be an email or a text message from a legitimate source, such as a government agency or a well-known company.

Covering up public QR codes, such as ones on parking meters, with fake QR codes.

Distribution of fake QR codes pretending to be coupons for things like grocery items.


There are measures we can take to prevent these fake QR code from harming us

Even if the sender looks legitimate, if you were not expecting anything, do not scan the QR code right away. Verify the source of the message and approach the content with caution.

Before opening a QR code to a website, double check the URL and make sure the URL is leading you to the proper website.

Treat QR codes like any other web links. Always use precaution when scanning, opening, and downloading anything from QR codes, especially the public ones and the source of unknown ones.

Disable Bluetooth if it is not in use.

Download and install software updates when prompted.

Do not download files or click on links sent via text/email by senders whom you cannot verify.

Do not answer phone calls by unknown numbers.

Do not leave your mobile device unattended in public.

Never share account details with anyone.

Minimize your digital footprint on social media by keeping personal information such as phone numbers and emails private.

Phishing email is type of online attack that trying to trick you to open their suspicious links.

The common Features of the phishing scam email:

Always ask you to click their links to view the important information

Sender’s email address is not match the email content

Use other company’s name and logo

Urgency message – Force you to take action immediately

Missing recipient’s name – your identity


Avoid falling into phishing email:

Don’t click any suspicious links

Think twice before any action

Search the legitimate link via Google first

Move the scam email to junk box or mark it as spam

Confirm the request information with your service provider
